Hidden Japan: Discover the Untouched Beauty of Shikoku and Wakayama
By Yoshi, HIS Hawaii staff
Having explored countless regions of Japan, I’ve come to believe that every corner of this country holds its own unique magic. Yet, even with that expectation, my journey through Shikoku and Wakayama left me completely in awe. Unlike the bustling energy of Tokyo or Osaka, or the historic elegance of Kyoto, these regions offer a richer, more authentic experience of Japan—untouched, deeply spiritual, and profoundly moving. If you’re yearning to uncover a side of Japan rarely seen, Shikoku and Wakayama are waiting to be discovered.

In Shikoku, hidden beauty lies around every corner. We’re definitely not in Tokyo anymore!
A Richer, Rawer Experience in Shikoku

Shikoku—a name that may not immediately spark recognition for many travelers—is a treasure trove of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and deep history. Each prefecture within this island tells its own unique story, and being able to explore them in one seamless journey was what made this tour so unforgettable.
Discovering the countryside temples that most visitors never see. A far cry from the congestion of Kyoto!

Tokushima’s Warm Hospitality and Awa Odori Dance
The people of Tokushima are as warm and inviting as the famous Awa Odori dance they’re known for. Witnessing this dynamic dance, with its colorful costumes, synchronized movements, and rhythmic taiko drumbeats, was an unforgettable experience. It’s not just a performance; it’s a celebration, and we were invited to join in, feeling like we belonged even if just for a night.

Kochi’s Lush Mountains and Pristine Rivers
Kochi’s natural beauty took my breath away. From hiking through verdant mountains to gazing at rivers so crystal-clear you could see every pebble, it was a nature lover’s paradise. A standout moment was visiting Nakatsu Gorge, where we marveled at the iconic “Niyodo Blue” waters pooling in the gorge’s basins. Floating down its serene waters was like stepping into a timeless world, offering a moment of calm amidst life’s busyness.

Ehime’s Hot Springs and Citrus Paradise
Ehime offered moments of indulgence and tranquility. Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, was a haven of relaxation. Soaking in its warm waters, surrounded by centuries of history, was an experience that rejuvenated both body and spirit. Adding to Ehime’s charm was its citrus bounty—every meal featured a burst of tangy, refreshing flavors, making it a true paradise for food lovers.

Kagawa: Udon Capital of Japan
When I think of Kagawa, one word comes to mind: udon. Known as Japan’s “Udon Prefecture,” Kagawa lived up to its reputation. One of the highlights of our visit was learning how to make udon noodles from scratch. From kneading the dough to savoring the finished dish, it was a simple yet incredibly satisfying experience that brought our group closer together.

The Spiritual Journey of the Ohenro Pilgrimage

What unites Shikoku’s four prefectures is the profound spiritual experience of the ohenro pilgrimage. Visiting sacred temples scattered across the island provided moments of reflection and connection. While I didn’t complete the full 88-temple pilgrimage, every temple we visited felt like a sanctuary. The rituals, the history, and the kindness of locals made it clear why this journey has been a source of inspiration for so many over the centuries. It’s not just a physical journey, but a deeply emotional one.

Wakayama: A Serene Finale
Our tour concluded in Wakayama, providing the perfect serene finale to our adventure. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, took us through ancient paths lined with towering cedar trees. Despite the heavy rain on the day we visited, it only added to the mystical atmosphere, particularly at Okunoin Cemetery, where the rain-soaked paths seemed to glow with a quiet magic.

A night spent at a temple lodging (shukubo) in Mount Koya (Koyasan) was a highlight of the tour. Waking to the soft chants of monks and enjoying the simplicity of shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) was an unforgettable experience. It was a moment to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the spiritual depth of this region.
