What is a Jjimjilbang (Korean Spa)?

Imagine walking into a cozy oasis of steamy baths, herbal saunas, and heated stone rooms. Jjimjilbangs are Korea’s answer to total body-mind restoration. You’ll experience this beloved local tradition firsthand—don’t worry, we’ll guide you through the do’s and don’ts so you can fully relax and enjoy.

A jjimjilbang (찜질방) is a traditional Korean bathhouse and wellness spa—a unique cultural space where relaxation, healing, and community come together. These multi-level facilities typically feature gender-separated bath areas with hot and cold soaking pools, steam rooms, and body scrubs, alongside co-ed dry saunas, each designed with natural elements like clay, charcoal, salt, or jade to promote different health benefits.

After soaking or sweating it out, guests change into spa loungewear and unwind in cozy communal areas. You might find people napping on heated floors, watching TV, enjoying Korean snacks like sikhye (sweet rice drink) and baked eggs, or catching up with friends and family.

Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or staying overnight, the jjimjilbang offers a uniquely Korean way to detox, de-stress, and slow down. It’s a peaceful reset—blending ancient wellness traditions with a modern, communal twist.
